You might like to use a mouthwash to freshen your breath or rinse the food particles from your mouth after eating. Your Dentist Epping says that is fine so long as that is only an additional health precaution – not an alternative to proper twice-daily brushing and once-daily flossing.
The cleaning component of a mouthwash
It is true that mouthwash can get into places in your mouth that your toothbrush can’t reach and thus help keep your mouth cleaner. But to have that effect, it needs to be what is called a therapeutic mouthwash and needs to contain ingredients that kill bacteria to help reduce plaque, gingivitis, and cavities.
It is good if it also contains fluoride as it will help protect your teeth from plaque-producing acids. The fluoride won’t actually remove plaque from your teeth, but it will be absorbed into your tooth enamel and make your teeth less prone to decay. If any of your teeth are damaged by acid from plaque, the fluoride will allow them to re-mineralise themselves.
Some therapeutic mouthwashes can be bought over the counter, but some require a prescription from your dentist.
Breath freshening
The other type of mouthwash is called a cosmetic mouthwash. It contains a breath-freshening flavouring like mint, though not necessarily, fluoride. These mouthwashes will give you a temporary pleasant taste in your mouth and may reduce or shield any bad breath for a short while.
If you like to use mouthwash because you are worried you may have bad breath, a more permanent solution requires input from your Dentist Epping in order to discover its source.
Children and mouthwash
Don’t give mouthwash to any of your children unless you have spoken to us. Children under six should not use it as it is too easy for them to swallow it, and the chemical concoction can make them nauseous or vomit.
If you’re concerned about any of these issues, please talk to your Dentist Epping about whether you need a mouthwash and what kind to use. Our advice will be wholly based on your dental health needs. That’s the way to peace of mind – and excellent dental health care!
