Sometimes people get an outbreak of a fungal infection (Candidiasis), commonly called thrush, in their mouth. If you have white spots on your tongue or inner cheeks, it could be that, your Dentist Epping says.
Thrush occurs when the yeast Candida albicans reproduces prolifically in your mouth, which can happen in a few different circumstances.
An outbreak of thrush is most common in people whose immune system is compromised by diseases such as leukemia or diabetes. It can also take off after a course of antibiotics, which kills the good bacteria in your mouth as well as the bad bacteria, causing a problem elsewhere in your body.
Your Dentist Epping says that thrush outbreaks seem to be encouraged by wearing a denture and by suffering from dry mouth syndrome.
Unfortunately, you may not be able to have an immune system functioning as well as you would like. In that case, you must be especially diligent in your daily oral care – your twice-daily tooth cleaning with fluoride toothpaste and once-daily teeth flossing.
To support your immune system and provide your body with the nutrients it needs, you will also find eating healthy whole foods and avoiding sugary drinks and snacks helpful.
If you wear a denture, good oral hygiene is essential. Clean the denture to remove any Candida on it, and while you are sleeping, store the cleaned denture in water.
You may also like to clean your tongue with a tongue scraper or gently brush it with your toothbrush. This only partially removes the thrush, but you may like how it makes your tongue feel.
If the cause of your thrush is a dry mouth, you can take saliva substitutes and prescription medicines to help the situation.
And do remember to make regular visits to your Dentist Epping, to ensure you have optimal oral health and keep on top of any thrush you may have.
