Wearing braces makes it even more important to remove the plaque and trapped bits of food from them and your teeth at least twice daily. Your Dentist Epping knows that the braces make this more difficult, but the problem is that the braces provide places for the plaque to attach to and spaces for food particles to lodge in.
That then creates problems you don’t want – decay, swollen gums, bad breath and permanently stained teeth. Twice-daily brushing and flossing are even more necessary than usual.
Each time you brush, do it gently for at least two minutes with a soft-bristled brush or electric toothbrush. Look for rounded bristles. Use fluoride toothpaste, and make sure you brush the fronts, backs, sides and chewing surfaces. Gently brush along the gum lines to clean and massage them too.
Flossing is a challenge as the brace’s wires make flossing between your teeth difficult. Your Dentist Epping can help with the type of floss you will need and a floss threader if you need one so you can floss underneath the archwires. That will help keep your teeth and gums as clean as they can be.
Sometimes, of course, you will be out at a mealtime and won’t be able to do this, but you can at least diligently swish water inside your mouth to rinse your teeth and braces. Spit the water down the sink afterwards.
Braces are fantastic for straightening teeth and giving you a lovely smile, but during the straightening procedure, it pays to take the time and effort to keep your teeth as clean as possible, so you avoid other dental problems.
We at your Dentist Epping wish you the very best with this – and implore you to contact us more frequently than your procedure’s set appointments if you run into any problems with your daily cleaning.
